I have just finished the painting below and show it publicly here for the first time. I plan to enter it in the upcoming Labor Day, MAA Kensington Armory show. It is a new one in my series of animal pictures named after comedy teams. This one shows six crows on a fence and is named after the characters in the hilarious troupe of comedians called Monty Python (Terry Gilliam, Eris Idle, Michael Palin, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, and Terry Jones).
My daughter Jessica and her fiance Chris James live in NYC in his 5B loft apartment at 284 Lafayette Street. Their front hall has a large empty white wall that I noticed when I visited in early February and thought that it needed one or more large (up to 6′ x 12′) paintings. So I did six watercolors, mostly abstracts per Jessica’s request. Which one do you like best enlarged for that space?
I have just confirmed the scheduling of three classes in the Fall at the Holiday Park Senior Center (HPSC). They are all a continuation of the same classes I have taught before at HPSC; Advanced Watercolor, Basic/Intermediate Watercolor, and Basic/Intermediate/Advanced Drawing. The two watercolor classes will start Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 10:30am and 1pm respectively, and continue every Tuesday for 14 sessions thru December 13. The Drawing class starts Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 10:30am, and will continue every Wednesday for 14 sessions thru December 14.
September 27, 2015: I’ve been busy painting since my hip surgery in July and before I get too busy this Fall teaching new classes (see Fall Classes webpage above). The most recent finished painting is the fourth in a series of paintings that I have done where the subject is wild animals and the titles of the paintings are comedy teams. The two earliest pictures, “Dean and Jerry” (two rhinoceros) , and “Larry, Curly, and Moe” (three crocodiles), were displayed here last year. Two posts below is the third picture in the series of giraffes called “Chico, Zeppo, Harpo, and Groucho”. The latest is immediately below called “John, Gilda, Laraine, Dan, Jane, Garrett, and Chevy”, the names of the original cast of Saturday Night Live. Enjoy.

August 31, 2015: This coming Labor Day weekend (9/5-7), I will be showing ten paintings in the Montgomery Artist Association (MAA) Annual Kensington “Paint the Town” Art Exhibition. My entry is one of more than 120 artists in what will be a major and very popular show. The ten pictures are a mix of abstracts, landscapes, still life, and portraits. A Seminal Exhibition of Original Drawings, Acrylics, & Watercolors Showcased in the Yellow Barn Gallery
June 15, 2015; Silver Spring, MD – Esteemed local artist and art professor at Montgomery College, Stephen T. Hanks, will present a special exhibit titled “A Lifetime Retrospective” in the Yellow Barn Gallery at Glen Echo Park over July 4th weekend. The public exhibit will showcase a large and diverse collection of Mr. Hanks’ work, including both abstract and realistic content, landscapes, still life, and portraits; encompassing both fantasy and fact, and are often imaginative and visionary.
The exhibit will be open to the public on Friday 7/3 from 4:00 to 8:00pmET; Saturday 7/4 from 12:00pm to 9:00pmET; and Sunday 7/5 from 12:00pm to 4:00pmET. A reception will be held both Friday and Saturday at 6pm and include a presentation by Mr. Hanks on “The Art of Creative Reaction” along with paintings that illustrate the subject. These events are in cooperation with the National Park Service and the Glen Echo Partnership for the Arts & Culture.
Mr. Hanks has been a practicing professional artist for more than 40 years. There is a constant in his style but a tremendous range in the subjects of his work. He has received multiple awards and his work has been showcased in many galleries and museums.

About Stephen T. Hanks
Stephen T. Hanks has been a practicing professional artist for more than 40 years, and his work has been showcased in a variety of galleries and museums including the Strathmore Museum, BlackRock Art Center, the Kentland’s Mansion, and art museums in Denver and San Francisco.
Since 2011, Hanks has been teaching Portraiture, Watercolor Painting, and Linear Perspective at Montgomery College, the Holiday Park Senior Center, several Montgomery County libraries, and at Leisure World. From 2005 to 2011, Mr. Hanks served as an art teacher at Gonzaga College High School. Prior to that, he spent 26 years at IBM as a commercial artist and a computer graphics software designer, while working independently as an illustrator for a variety of publications and teaching art part-time.
He has been a Signature member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society for many years and an associate member of the National and American Watercolor Societies. His work has been published in the 2009 and 2012 Best of America Watermedia Artists annual catalogs. He specializes in both drawing and watercolor media producing an eclectic mix of non-objective, abstract, and realistic content. Even his non-representational work, upon closer examination, reveals landscapes, faces and human forms, Christian symbols, and fantastic imagery that grow out of the design.
Mr. Hanks earned his Master’s degree in Art Education at SUNY New Paltz in 1978 while living and teaching for six years in the art colony of Woodstock, NY. He received his BFA from the University of Colorado in 1972.
Mr. Hanks is also an accomplished portrait artist and illustrator occasionally doing private commissioned portraits and commercial work.
